Back in 2018, in those heady Pre-Covid days, I met someone who has become an intrinsic part of the Pixi Rebel process - photographer extraordinaire Tamara Peel. I loved creating costumes for the kids and she loved photographing them.
The first shoot we did was just before Halloween and the theme was there - ready to be used. Both Tamara and I are naturally drawn to the peculiar and somewhat other. Also, these pheasants were only borrowed and had already met their demise, not at our hands...
“The stories pretty much wrote themselves.”
As the kids and Tamara started playing around magic slowly but surely unfolded...
This first shoot would be the first of many
For this first shoot, I had not yet developed an idea of what Pixi Rebels really was. My background is in pure costume design and that was naturally where I went. Though this was a whole lot of fun, I felt I wanted to keep on pushing for something new. I have always had a passion of upcycling -- way before it became a thing. I know I really wanted to try and use materials that were already 'in existence'.
I have also always loved to work into fabrics to create more texture. Here I used a soldering iron to create a burn-out pattern in the over-layer.
For the boy's jacket I played around with a second hand morning-jacket. on this one I appliquéd embroideries from a discarded shalwar kameez that had, in parts, seen better days. The biggest appliqué was used for the cape that was made from a waxed fabric that was a left-over from a show I did in an other life-time;)
