I loved my life as a Costume Designer; bringing stories to life, collaborating with other creatives and rummaging through endless racks of costumes, fabrics, trims and buttons in search of the perfect 'mortalisation' of 'letterised' beings.
As a Costume Designer you extract human beings from black marks on white paper. It is exacting and exhilarating in equal measures, culminating once all these extraordinary creative auteurs come together, in an auditorium for the magical alchemy of theatre making. It is only on opening night that the final/ vital component is added - the audience. That is when you know if the experiment/ the magic has happened ...or, not...
“As a Costume Designer we build people and worlds, as magical and real as we can possibly muster, with what we have at our disposal and with those alchemists that we are surrounded.”
As you can imagine, that job is pretty addictive and demands an absolute surrender of both body and soul, anything less and you will be found wanting and thus tossed aside. Needless to say, combining it with other, hugely demanding 'creatures' in your life - something eventually has to give. I realised that my time in the dream factory was over and I was to seek new and excitingly challenging beginnings...
